Many veterans and families don’t realize help is available. Grants can cover home safety upgrades like grab bars, bathroom changes, and accessibility improvements.
If you’re in the Houston or Tomball area, here’s a simple guide to your options.
HISA Grant for Veterans
The HISA Grant is one of the most common VA programs for home safety.
What it covers:
- Grab bars
- Bathroom safety upgrades
- Roll-in showers
- Door widening
- Ramps and other necessary changes
Grant amount:
- Up to $6,800 (service-connected)
- Up to $2,000 (non-service-connected)
How it works:
A VA doctor must approve the need. The request is then submitted through the VA.
You’ll need:
- A contractor quote
- Photos of the area
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify if you:
- Are enrolled in VA healthcare
- Have a medical need (fall risk or limited mobility)
- Receive a recommendation from a VA doctor
The condition does not have to be service-connected.
Other VA Housing Grants
SAH Grant (Specially Adapted Housing)
For severe service-connected disabilities.
- Covers major home changes
- Can exceed $100,000
SHA Grant (Special Housing Adaptation)
For qualifying disabilities.
- Covers accessibility updates
- Typically up to $20,000+
Texas Veterans Commission (HMAP)
Texas offers additional help through the Texas Veterans Commission.
You may qualify if you:
- Live in Texas
- Have a service-connected disability
- Meet income guidelines (in some cases)

Approval can take time.
